Tricked ya!
Did you know, that when geckos are under stress they can detach their tails? Such as when a predator is hunting them, they will purposely wiggle their tail as the predator goes to attack. The gecko will then detach its tail and scatter away. Geckos bodies are designed so that the tail will grow back incase it happens again. Pretty awesome huh!
We can smell with our tongues
Did you know that snakes and lizards can smell with their tongues? They stick out their tongue and pick up scent particles in the air which are then transferred to the Jacobson organ (a patch of sensory cells within the main nasal chamber that detects heavy moisture-borne odour particle) in the reptile’s mouth. Amazing right!
Changing colour
A bearded dragons back’s will sometimes turn a darker colour at the night time to hold in warmth and heat. It’s similar to when we wear darker clothes in the winter to keep warm.
Third eye
Bearded Dragons can sense predator’s from the back of their head. I know, sounds weird right! This is actually what we call the third eye. It allows them to detect changes in light due to regulating their body temperature. The ‘Third Eye’ has a basic lens and retina (light sensitive tissue in the back of our eye). It can sense approaching predator’s through the changes in light. Cool right!
